The 2017 Major League All Star Game was a huge hit for Boys & Girls Clubs in South Florida. Celebrating our 21st year as the official charity of Major League Baseball, the All-Star festivities brought new and exciting opportunities to our local Clubs and their members.
To start the exciting week off, Major League Baseball hosted two All-Star Legacy Projects. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s Belle Glade Teen Center, MLB supported the renovation of a dance studio, teen center and new state of art technology center. In the afternoon, we traveled to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County's Leo Goodwin Teen Center and unveiled a new technology lab, music studio and lounge. Supporting our Back2School efforts, Club members at each facility received All-Star backpacks filled with school supplies to get them ready for the new school year, thanks to MLB and the Florida Marlins Foundation.
On All-Star Tuesday, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, Alex Rodriguez and I attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Kendall Clubhouse. Alex Rodriguez, an Alum of the organization, partnered with Scotts to provide funds to renovate three baseball fields while MLB and the Marlins Foundation supported the renovation of a brand new teen center.
More than 150 Club Members from Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County and Miami-Dade participated in MLB All-Star events during the week. Activities included the Play Ball World Series, MLB All-Star FanFest, Mascot Home Run Derby, and serving as flagbearers for the All-Star Futures game. One of the most exciting moments was the All-Star Youth Ambassadors program, when Club members took the field with the starting players for the National and American League. BGCA was featured prominently during the All-Star Game, as National Youth of the Year Joceyln W. delivered the game ball to the mound. The BGCA logo was also highlighted behind home plate and along the foul line lines, recognizing us as MLB’s youth charity.
In total, MLB and the Miami Marlins Foundation provided some $700,000 in direct and in-kind services to Clubs and youth in the Miami market. My thanks to Joceyln and BGCA's LaTrese Coyt, Kirk Douglas for making the week a Grand Slam for BGCA!
