Last weekend, a crowd assembled on a snowy winter morning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International and its legacy partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and local Clubs across the country.

There is a deep, rich history with the Kiwanis organization, which helped found the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta over 75 years ago. Over 600 young people a year still attend Camp Kiwanis, too. The camp in northeast Georgia is the first exposure many Club kids have to wilderness, as well as activities such as kayaking, outdoor living, fishing and orienteering. For some, it’s the first time they’ve been out of their neighborhood.
Adding to the significance of the ceremony was the purpose and spirit of the playground, which equates to our healthy lifestyles pillar and the need for all kids to participate in 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Unfortunately, a desert is being created in America when it comes to providing kids with opportunities to understand the importance of good nutrition and sufficient space to play games and sports.

I am proud and enthusiastic for this continued partnership with the Kiwanis and their commitment to help kids lead healthy lives. Congratulations to Kiwanis International for its global service for the past 100 years. Congratulations as well to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, Missy Dugan and her entire team for helping to change and save lives and create Great Futures every day.
