For all his professional accomplishments, Brandon Bass of the Boston Celtics can’t swim. So when his 2-year-old son learned to swim, Brandon, 28, wanted to keep up with the toddler. That’s why he’s taking swimming lessons at the Charlestown Club of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.
As you can see, the 6’ 8” and 260 pounds, Brandon was hard to miss when he recently joined 10 Club kids in the shallow end for their first lesson. He plans to participate as long as his basketball schedule allows, then take private lessons until he can swim.
Brandon’s participation makes a great story. It also raises awareness about a serious problem. Drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children under the age of 14 in our country. It was the 2011 drowning death of a local child that spurred the Boston Club to ramp up efforts to help their members learn to swim.
Kudos to Brandon and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. We look forward to hearing more about not only his dunks, but also his dives.
